Motorcycle Helmet Ratings and What They Mean

Motorcycle Helmet Ratings and What They Mean

When you are shopping for a motorcycle helmet, you have likely noticed that they each come with a rating denoting that they have met the minimum standards to be deemed safe and roadworthy. We all know how important proper head protection is for motorcyclists, as this can make the difference between life and death if you are so unfortunate as to get into an accident on your bike. Here's what you need to know about helmet ratings.

The Department of Transportation (DOT)

All motorcycle helmets manufactured and sold in the United States are required to meet the minimum standards set by the DOT. These standards set the minimum requirements for helmet safety in terms of impact protection. Although all helmets must meet or exceed these requirements, there is no formalized system for testing. Manufacturers self-report that their helmets are safe. Because this designation is self-granted, it doesn't do much to instill confidence that you have found a safe helmet, as there is no verification that the manufacturer's claims are true.

The Snell Foundation

If you want to be really sure that the helmet you have chosen is as safe as possible, look for one that has been certified by Snell. Snell is a private organization that tests helmets independently from the DOT. Helmet manufacturers must submit their helmets for testing in order to earn Snell certification. Participation is entirely optional, but you can have confidence that helmet manufacturers that choose to go this route are committed to ensuring the quality and safety of their products.

The requirements for Snell certification are much more stringent than the DOT standards, so helmets with this certification are among the best available and will provide you with the most protection. It is quite difficult for helmets to meet the high standards set by the Snell Foundation, and only the best of the best measure up.

Other Considerations

Of course, helmet safety is incredibly important, but it is not the only factor you should consider. It is crucial that your helmet fits properly as well. The safest helmet in the world won't provide much protection for you if it doesn't fit well. Take the time to find a helmet that fits snugly to minimize the risk of it slipping off in an accident. Sizing varies across brands, so try a few to find your perfect fit.
